Courage Conquering Racism
Back in the day courage was very rare. African Americans versus Caucasians left a segregated and harsh environment between the two races. It was clear that the Caucasians were viewed as a stronger more dominant race. In the years of Mr. Luther King, African Americans were in an ongoing fight to be viewed and treated as equals against the Caucasians. While reading Mr.Luther Kings Speech “I Have a Dream”, the amount of courage for an African American man to stand up and deliver a speech that most would fear to give due to the hatred they would receive, possibly even death, he stood against his fear and preached to the world standing up for himself and his race to change the world knowing the consequences were not going to be pretty.
Africans Americans in the time period of 1963 were in the midst of mistreatment due to their appearance. For Martin Luther King to put his life on the line to stand up for what he believes is right for his race and for the stability of America shows how courageous of a man one can be when they are preaching about something so near and dear to their hearts. “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.” (Martin Luther King. para.17) For this statement King had a lot of courage to be asking of such high demand. Back in the day this type of statement “to be sitting together” was unheard of and out of and never crossed the minds of Americans because it was an a idea so out of the norm.
This text was very significant in my life. I see and have learned this famous speech from when i was young to this very day. It is always being taught in schools and in real life. Kings Speech set new goals for American lifestyle, without his speech of “I Have a Dream” I wouldn’t be living in the world I live in today. The courage it took for this man in the time that he lived in to be able to change the future that i now live in is incredible. Without Martin Luther King and his courage to stand up for what he believed in I would still be living in a time where there is segregation between races of African Americans and Caucasians. He states “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” (Martin Luther King .para. 19) In this quote from his famous speech he states what he wants for the future of his children and the future for the rest of America, for me. His courage to stand up is what brought me these freedoms and rights along with the rest of America to treat everyone no matter what race equally.
Martin Luther King went down in American history as one of the main influences in todays changes throughout the Americas. Sadly his courageous out speaking brought upon his assassination in April 4 1968. He risked his life to change ours and that is why he went down in history as one of the main influences to the culture of America. In America we are taught on a platform “treat your neighbor how you’d want to be treated.” This saying us as Americans live by from day to day is what keeps Americas backbone strong and this idea of treating each other as equals initially came from King’s speech “I have a Dream”.
Martin Luther King stood up for what he believed was right in his speech “I Have a Dream”. This speech carried the main ideas of life throughout history and left a legacy out of King. Courage is also taken in the form of standing up for what you believe right even if it means you might be risking your life for the bettering of your own country. King changed the future so that we could live in a society where everyone is created equal along with being treated as equals. He found this to be one of the main key aspects to American Culture because if we could come together as one and not be constantly fighting with our racial groups and minorities we could come together as one and become a power nation, which we did due to this one man’s courage.
