PA 2- Quote
Silence Speaks Louder Than Words
Courage may be perceived as only standing up and speaking your mind, what most do not realize that it also takes just as much courage to sit down and not speak. While analyzing the quote by american author Winston Churchill, we learn that courage is not what everyone thinks it is yet it is the opposite and takes as much courage to not speak your mind in times that you really want to.
Churchill’s quote relates directly to courage. Most people believe courage is standing up for what you believe in and getting your voice out there. Churchill’s quote has an amazing line which states: “Courage is also what is takes to sit down and listen.”(Churchill). It conveys that the perception of courage is not only standing for what you believe in and making people listen to what you have to say, but that it also takes just as much or even more courage to sit down and listen to what others have to say, and respecting their opinions enough to take time to listen.
This quote relates to me in many ways. I found it very significant to my life because I have always had that single minded view that courage is standing up for yourself and having people listen to you. Where from this quote I learned that it takes more courage to stop what you are thinking and making sure you are listening to others ahead of your own thoughts. An example on a day to day basis where I see this type of courage show through myself is when I ask my parents for something that they say I can not have or can not do. It takes all the courage in my body not to speak up and give them a piece of my mind. It takes courage to sit there and listen and to agree with my parents knowing they have my best at heart. Even though in that moment when I am angry that I did not get my way, courage is what helps me to keep my tongue tied and not get in even more trouble.
This quote correlates directly to the American culture we have today. That is that as Americans we are given our freedom of speech as a basic right in the first amendment of our constitution. This right can be viewed in a good light and a very bad light because we have learned over the years to stand up for what we believe in and as Americans we are very hard headed and enjoy the satisfaction of being right. The line from this quote that correlates to American culture states: “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak;”(Churchill) Americans do this very well because we like having our opinions heard and we like others to listen to what we have to say. As an American I think this is a good skill to have being able to speak our mind and have the freedom to say what we want and to be heard, we just need to keep in mind that our words are very influential and they need to be put to a good cause rather than something that is detrimental.
Courage can be viewed in two different ways, from the person who is not afraid to stand up for what they believe in and tell the world what they are thinking, but courage is also for the people that know the time and place to sit down and hold the tongue and listen to what others may be thinking. This quote by Winston Churchill taught me that courage is not always putting on a strong front and driving for what you believe in, but it is also standing back and listening to others.
