Courage Ever Present
Courage is an ongoing belief in oneself that is always present even if you triumph or you fail. Courage is not the success or the failure, it is the driving force within you to make the attempt. While analyzing the poem “Courage” by Edgar A. Guest, it is specified that courage is always present. Whether you triumph or you fail, Edgar believes that courage comes from deep in the soul of a man, not from a specific action or event. Americans succeed not because we are the best, but because we aren’t afraid to try, we always strive for the best attempting to create the next big thing even if we do not always succeed the experience of the attempt takes courage to step out of the norm and attempt something thats never been achieved. Guest’s poem paints a good picture as to what courage looks like through examples of strength, time, and belief.
Having courage is not something that is momentary, one either has it or they do not. It isn’t something that hopefully pops up right when it is needed, but rather something that guides everything tried and faced. “Courage isn’t a brilliant dash, / A daring deed in a moment’s flash; / It isn’t an instantaneous thing / Born of despair with a sudden spring” This part of the poem shows how courage does not come and go, and it is not something that just occurs when faced with challenges. Shows that courage is only present when one is faced with a instantaneous battle that needs to be beaten. Courage is not always present but when it is one may conquer anything in that moment. “It's part of a man when his skies are blue, / It's part of him when he has work to do. / The brave man never is freed of it. / He has it when there is no need of it.” Guest says that courage is present when things are good (skies are blue) as well as when it is needed to accomplish the things in front of us (work to do). I like how he says “we are never freed of it” because it shows that courage is always within us, ready at every moment.
I really loved how Guest described courage. He gave such a good description of what courage is and what it is not. Take the following piece of this poem for example:“It’s part of his hours, his days and his years,/ Back of his smiles and behind his tears./ Courage is more than a daring deed:/ It’s the breath of life and a strong man’s creed” Courage is part of every moment of every day of one’s life. Either a person has it or they don’t. Its not something comes and goes. When Guest states “Back of his smiles and behind his tears” I interpreted that courage is present in everything that we try to achieve, not mattering on the outcome of our attempts whether its “smiles” or if its “tears” there was always courage that strived you to get to that point. Courage is something more than just what is done, it is what strong people are made of. I had thought the definition of courage was doing a “daring deed”, like diving off the high diving board at Michigan State. However i’ve learned that most everything I do takes courage and that courage is within me and makes me brave enough to try and attempt new things like, gymnastics, volleyball, and even taking feared tests.
Americans culture is loaded with examples of courage. It took courage to break away from England and sail in a boat to the “Promised land”. “Courage was never designed for show; / It isn't a thing that can come and go; / It's written in victory and defeat / And every trial a man may meet.” Americans aren’t braggers of their accomplishments instead we silently believe in ourselves. America showed courage in our victories in the World Wars, in which we won. And as well we showed courage in our painful defeat as we were attacked on 9/11. We didn’t cave and give up, but instead we vowed to find those responsible.
Analyzing this poem helped me to believe that courage is something that you have, not something that you do. Courage resides inside of us, always ready to assist with the challenges that we face. Plus it is key to realize that courage isn’t just present in our successes, but also in our failures. It is courage that makes us face our fears and attempt to overcome them, whether we succeed or fail, it was courage that got us to make the initial attempt.
