Fear Can Not Hold you Back
Fear is an ongoing challenge in everyones lives and is something we all struggle to conquer. To conquer a fear one must possess “courage”. Stated in the quote by Mark Twain courage is only present if fear is present “ Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.” He argues that courage is only courage if you fear it. I believe this to be a main struggle of American culture today because we have constant uproars in our lives that we face that we fear and need courage to battle for instance cancer, war, and even economy. Mark Twain’s quote, shows that it takes courage to conquer a fear, throughout the life of an American we will conquer a fear but there will always be another challenge needed to be faced.
Courage may come easier to some people compared to that of others because we all fear different things. For me it can be as little as killing a spider crawling in my room, because that is something I fear. for others, something as little as that would take zero courage at all, because they do not fear spiders. Courage isn’t measured on a scale of how frightening a task is, but it depends on that individual’s aspect of carrying out that challenge. Sadly fear is always present. You can conquer one fear, just to be faced with the next fear.
Life would not be life if we didn’t come to road block where we had to stop and conquer a challenge in order to continue. Sadly it’s not a one and done deal either, one may gain up the courage and defeat their demons but we can always count on another challenge to come along. Mark Twain’s quote may have been prompted from the fact that he wrote 52 novels, yet two of his most famous novels The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer were both banned. For him, he had to conquer this challenge of fearing his hard worked on novels might be banned. As an author Twain grew as a person, having his most greatest creations banned was a challenge in his life that made him realize that there are roadblocks, and these banned books did not make him stop his work as an author, but instead he used these challenges and gaining up his courage to continue being an American author.
Analyzing this quote opened my eyes showing me that in life there will always be challenges that need to be faced, and all that is needed to conquer fears is courage. Courage may come easier to some compared to others, but it is a self test that gets us through life, and courage is worth having because it makes a stronger human being. Mark Twain’s quote is significant because it correlates to a wide mass of American’s lives and if read can give a person who is being beaten down by a fear a sense of power in knowing it is conquerable.
