Small Courage Big Change
Courage is found even in the simplest forms throughout life. Courage can be as far as trying new things and as near as standing up to someone you love. Courage doesn’t have to be considered something you only possess during the tough times and the major struggles in life, but also on a day to day basis when trying to fit in, or just daring to be different. The simplest forms of courage are sometimes the hardest to handle. In the short story Green Eggs and Ham by Dr.Seuss, courage is found in the form of stepping out from what one is used to and daring to try new things and be different in hopes of changing oneself, shown through the simplicity of trying green eggs and ham Dr.Seuss portrays the message that courage is found in the little things with the bigger picture that it is a good thing to not be “normal” for one might end up enjoying the new better than the old.
Green Eggs and Ham relates to courage in major ways that do not stand out very strongly while reading it from the view of a childrens book. After analyzing the text it became clear that courage has a strong presence in Dr.Seuss's short story. When Sam insists that the unnamed character try these out of the ordinary “green eggs and ham”, he lists multiple different venues and guests he could try eating them with, for instance “Would you eat them in a box? Would you eat them with a fox?” (Dr.Seuss). The unnamed character is very persistent on not trying this dish along with saying “I do not like them, Sam-I-am.” (Dr.Seuss) without having ever experienced the food. The unnamed character is making assumptions about this unusual dish just because he does not like the company of Sam-I-am. Even though the unnamed character only tries the green eggs and ham in hopes that it will get rid of Sam, Megan Jones states “He shows courage when trying the new dish and later gratitude to Sam for introducing him to it.” (Megan Jones. Prezzi). This quote is a true statement because after being so rude to Sam it had to take a lot of courage to man up and try it and then admit he liked the dish.
Dr.Seuss’s story of Green Eggs and Ham was very relatable to my life. When I was growing up I found myself having the same mannerisms as the unnamed character, constantly denying the new foods my mother would offer me. I grew up though and she persistently offered me the same foods just as the character Sam-I-Am in The Green Eggs and Ham did. Same as the unknown character I gave into my mother's constant pushing and persuasion and tried the longed denied treats. Now they are now some of my favorite dishes same as the character in the short story. In the story it states, “I do so like green eggs and ham! Thankyou! Thank you, Sam-I-am!” (Dr.Seuss). It took courage for the unnamed character to man up and admit with defeat that he likes the unusual dish and thanks Sam for introducing him to it. I have yet to build up the courage to tell my mom the same even though she would most likely really enjoy hearing that I turned out liking it.
This story correlates to American Culture today in the fact that as Americans it takes all the courage we have to admit even the simplest of things. As Americans we are very stuck up about our opinions being the correct opinion and for American Author Dr.Seuss to point out this problem that we have in America took courage for him as an author but also showed us, as the audience, that we need the courage to admit defeat when we are wrong and to thank the people in our lives who helped us to realize our shortcomings. Dr.Seuss shows that change can be a good thing and in America we are always open to change and trying new things to expand our culture to be the best possible version we can be. For example Americans learned to try new foods from the Native Americans when we first arrived in this new world, as well we learned grow and accept the changes of each new president and administration.
Courage comes in many forms and can be found in many situations. But in all of these circumstances courage is a way to bring about change in a person or in a country. This is shown through the short story Green Eggs and Ham written by Dr. Seuss, showing the courage to admit your defeat and admitting that your opinion was wrong and thanking others. As Americans this is not always easy to admit due to our cultural perceptions of being right all the time is better and is how we show our superiority, but all in all Dr.Seuss had the right mind set, that to change and grow as a whole it is needed to be open to opinions and new ideas to strengthen our country.
