Courage Is
We as humans are faced every day with new struggles and events that will hold us back from moving forward with our lives and becoming who we have intended to become. Courage is not something we are taught to have as we grow up but it is self learned through the challenges that we face, if we want to continue our lives or be defined by the present issues. The song “Courage Is” by The Strange Familiar, says that courage is present in many things like love, life, truth, or when your deepened with pain. In all of these aspects courage is what makes you move past the hard times and to continue living.
This song connects to courage because it is about the good and the bad of courage. It shows how courage can take you from pain to happiness. It shows how courage is something you need to turn your life around. The song states “Courage is when you’re afraid, but you keep on moving anyway.” This line is a clear statement of what courage is, when something you’re afraid of faces you, you have two choices, to either let that fear determine who you are, or have the courage to face your fears and break through and possibly end up improving who you are. Another line that The Strange Familiar used was “Take all my pieces of doubt and let me be what’s underneath.” Showing who you really are on the inside takes courage because it is opening up to others, showing them all your skeletons in the closet, and hoping that they will take you for who you are, not for what you choose for them to know.
I really like how The Strange Familiar’s used so many examples to attempt to touch on a struggle that we all have gone through. For example in their lyrics they state “Courage is when you’ve lost your way, but you find your strength anyway.” This line in the lyrics really spoke to me because I found it to be really good motivation to get me through any troubles I may be facing, because it’s very easy to get side tracked in life and end up down a path you don’t want to be on. It is showing that courage can help you get set back on the right track, and it takes strength to believe in yourself to conquer. Another line from Courage Is that I personally really liked was “Like a bird with broken wings its not how high he flies, but the song he sings.” This quote was significant to me because it shows that anyone can show courage, even the ones that have been hurt or broken. Courage is accepting your disability and proving yourself by showing off what is good in you, because that’s what people are more interested in.
This song is reflective of American culture because it shows in many ways how courage is perceived through the eyes of Americans. It talks about the struggles we face like love, hard times, vicious words, and doubts. These are day to day struggles Americans are faced with and the song shows that these tough times are what mold us to be our bettered selfs, and the only way to get past them is having courage. One of the main lines that I thought portrayed the American culture was “Take all my vicious words and turn them into something good.” In America we have freedom of speech and sadly not everything that comes out of peoples’ mouths are always kind. We need courage to use these words that have hurt us to better ourselves and to take a lesson away from what you were told.
In America courage is something found in the littlest things in life and we use them every day to conquer whatever we may be going through. This song, Courage Is by The Strange Familiar, showed that courage is a tough battle to get you to where you want to be, but it also shows that achieving courage is very worth it. Through the analyzation of American Culture, courage is what can get one through the hardships at the breaking point of disruption, to overcoming and pushing through to be able to achieve a state of serenity and self assurance.
