PA 6- Novel excerpt
Courage is Love
Courage is sacrificing yourself for those whom you love. Having the strength to put your life on the line for somebody that you care about shows in your character how strong a person you are and that is to me what courage is all about. In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, courage is demonstrated in the short passage where the older sister Katniss volunteers her life to be put in the arena for her little sister who was originally chosen, even though the odds could turn out not in Katniss’s favor she had the courage to protect her sister who she loved by putting her life on the chopping block demonstrating that courage is an act of love.
This excerpt represents courage in many ways, Katniss has the courage to stand for her little sister. She never saw this day coming and therefore she did not spend days learning what it means to have courage. Courage was thrust upon her in the spur of the moment when she screams out ““I volunteer!” I gasp. “I volunteer as tribute!”” (Collins 22) This quote shows courage because Katniss is still a young adult herself and she knows the odds of her coming out of the hunger games is very slim, yet she knows she has a stronger chance over that of her little sister, the courage it took for her to put her life on the line with the possible ending of death was what courage is all about, giving up what is yours for the bettering of a loved one.
Even though I personally have never had to go through the courage of volunteering my life for someone that I love, I have had many instances where I have had to find the courage in myself to give up something that I love to make a loved one happy. For example I have a huge fear of needles and drawing blood and I avoided the situation of ever having to draw it at all costs. One day when my sister became very ill she was taken to the hospital and needed a family members blood who was the same blood type as her O-negative, which is extremely rare and hard to find on the spot. Knowing that me as her sister, having the same blood type, I knew at that moment what had to be done. I had to build up the courage and conquer my fear of needles and drawing blood for the wellness of my sister. Like in the book when Katniss beats the Hunger Games and is able to return home safely to her sister prim, even though I was not coming home from a life or death situation the thrill I received from conquering my fear and having courage was worth coming home to a healthy sister knowing that I was the one who made it all possible.
This excerpt relates a lot to American Culture. Americans today will do anything for the people that we love, we go through extreme extents putting ourselves in danger for the bettering of a loved one, which is all capable through courage and belief. American culture is shown in the text when it states “ The girl who five years ago stood huddled with her mother and sister, as he presented her, the oldest child, with a medal of valor. A medal for her father, vaporized in the mines.” (Collins 23) This quote relates very personally to that of many stories that of americans who have lost families due to mine incidents. In America many families the same types of honor who have lost a loved one who was off fighting in wars and has had the courage to receive a medal of honor for their deceased loved one. American culture we face a lot of hardship when it comes to our troops and the courage our families have to take to stand back and let them go risk their lives for the bettering of our country relates a lot to the story The Hunger games with Katniss volunteering for Prim in their “war” better known as “the hunger games” because the hunger games our based purely on the bettering of the 12 districts demonstrating who maintains the sole power in keeping them in line and free of corruption.
Courage in the excerpt The Hunger Games by Suzanne collins is clearly shown as giving up what you value as in Katniss’s life for the bettering of her sisters life, this relates to American Culture today with the hardship our troops face as they go off to fight in wars for the bettering of their loved ones back home and as a country as a whole. Suzanne Collins pulls together the topics of courage and honor, showing that in American culture today we are willing to give up anything for our loved ones and that maintaining civility in our hometowns is important to keep from an unraveled country, which is all done through love and courage.
